Literature & ELA with Ms. E. Scarfogliero

Grade 6

ELA class is proving to be a wonderful learning experience for all this school year. We are currently enhancing our grammar knowledge with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs and the recognition of subjects and predicates. Already the class has written a 5 paragraph essay and continues to learn essay structure. A 5 paragraph research based essay unit will begin in conjunction with the soc. st. curriculum. We will actively refine our writing skills by writing poems and essays. Currently, we have studied analogies to enhance our vocabulary skills. The synonym and antonym relationships are being studied with the Voc. Unit 6 in our Vocabulary Workshop books. We are also gearing up for the NYS ELA Exam this month.

ELA/Literature class is proving to be an extraordinary year as we delve into classic literary works and continue our grammar knowledge.
Our latest classic was The Old Man & The Sea. We have completed many web quests to study the background of the novella and the author. Many literary devices were identified in this unit. The students did a wonderful job of analyzing the devices. Currently, an epilogue is being written cooperatively and will be published using a virtual story program using storyjumper.com.
In ELA, many 5 paragraph essays have been written to enhance writing skills and a sonnet structure was studied. A 5 paragraph expository essay was just written in conjunction with the science curriculum. A research based essay will be written in conjunction with the soc. st. curriculum on the topic of the American Revolution. Also, vocabulary is continually being enhanced.
