Welcome to
Second Grade
with
Ms. Corwin!
This is my third year teaching second grade at OLL! I grew up in Catholic Education! I went to St. Agnes Cathedral School, Sacred Heart Academy and Fairfield University for my Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
Favorite Saint: St. Joan of Arc
Favorite Bible Verse: "Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter; whoever finds one finds a treasure. Faithful friends are beyond price, no amount can balance their worth. Faithful friends are life-saving medicine; those who fear God will find them. Those who fear the Lord enjoy stable friendship, for as they are, so will their neighbors be." Sirach 6: 14-17
Religion: Second Grade is a very important sacrament year! The students will be preparing for their First Penance and First Holy Communion! We use the Sophia Insitiute series that has lessons focusing on the values the students need to recieve their sacraments. In addition, each school day begins with a school-wide morning prayer and religious announcement, like a reading from the bible or saint's feast day, from our principal Mr. Harth. Also, as a school community, we pray the Angelus every day, before lunch, with Mr. Harth as lead.
ELA: We use the Into Reading series for our ELA curriculum. Each week consists of a different spelling list with vocabulary words and 1 - 2 stories. This year, we will focus on reading fluency, oral and written comprehension. Also, the students will be introduced to Grammar through various lessons and writing projects!
Math: We utilize the Into Math series for the Math curriculum. As students follow along with the lessons in workbooks, those skills are enhanced with interactive SmartBoard lessons, as well as hands-on activities with math manipulatives. Some new topics this year are 2 - and 3 - digit addition and subtraction, place value and fractions!
Science: We use Inspire Science series for the Science curriculum. Students will learn a variety of topics using workbooks, interactive Smartboard lessons and STEM activites. The students will become scientists by researching Earth's landscape and a variety of habitats. There will be an animal research project at the end of the year!
